Historical significance
Malvan's history is dominated by Sindhudurg, the sea fort built between 1664 and 1667 by Shivaji Maharaj to secure the Konkan coast against the Portuguese and the Siddis — one of the finest sea forts in India, its massive walls studded with bastions, built with local laterite and lime mortar that has survived three centuries of monsoon surf. The fort encloses temples, including one dedicated to Shivaji himself, and a large freshwater well, and its history includes its role in the Maratha navy's campaigns under Kanhoji Angre. Malvan town's older heritage is maritime and agricultural — a fishing and salt-trading port with a distinctive Malvani culture, language and cuisine — and the region's coconut, cashew and Alphonso orchards have sustained its economy for centuries.
