Historical significance
Lonavala entered history as a staging point on the old trade and military route between the Konkan coast and the Deccan plateau, a path that made the ghats here a contested corridor for centuries. The forts that ring the town are its archive: Rajmachi, held and fortified by Shivaji Maharaj in the 17th century, and Lohagad ('iron fort'), which Shivaji used to stash treasure after the 1664 sack of Surat, connected to the plain by the iconic Vinchu Kata scorpion-tail wall. Under the British, the 1860s construction of the Mumbai–Pune railway and the old ghat road turned Lonavala into a colonial hill resort, and by the 1920s it was a fixed point of the Bombay social calendar. The chikki industry — the town's famous peanut brittle — grew directly from the pilgrim and tourist traffic on this same ancient route.
Geographical significance
Lonavala sits at 622 m on the crest of the Western Ghats escarpment, where the Deccan plateau breaks toward the Konkan coastal plain. The town lies on a plateau of Deccan Traps basalt — lava flows from around 66 million years ago — that weather into the distinctive flat-topped hills, valley lakes (Tungarli, Lonavala, Bhushi) and seasonal waterfalls that define the landscape. Its position on the windward edge of the ghats means the southwest monsoon dumps heavy rain between June and September, feeding the waterfalls and the dam lakes, while the sharp escarpment edge produces the valley views and cloud-filled mornings that are the area's signature. The surrounding forest, part of the northern Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot, hosts leopard, gaur and a rich range of ghat birds.
