Historical significance
Dapoli's history is coastal and naval. The sea forts in its waters were part of Shivaji Maharaj's 17th-century maritime strategy: Suvarnadurg ('golden fort'), captured from the Bijapur Sultanate in 1660 and strengthened with heavy artillery, was a key base of the Maratha navy under Kanhoji Angre, while the nearby fort of Harnai guarded the harbour that still works today. The region was also a centre of the 19th-century Konkan trade in salt and fish, and Dapoli grew as a market town for the hinterland's coconuts and rice. In the 20th century, its cool, breezy shore and the government's agricultural college gave it a genteel character, and its beaches — Karde, Ladghar, Anjarle — became quiet weekend escapes on the same coastline as the region's great pilgrimage temples at Ganpatipule.
Geographical significance
Dapoli sits on a bluff at the northern edge of the Konkan coast, in the Ratnagiri district, where the Western Ghats come close to the sea, compressing the coastal strip into a narrow, green band of lateritic soil. The coast here is a series of wide, gentle beaches and rocky headlands, backed by coconut and areca groves and the region's famous Alphonso mango orchards.
