Wan lies in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand at about 1,900 m, 20 km from Karnaprayag and 220 km from Dehradun — the trek village of the region, its Kali peak base, the forests and the farms set on the Garhwal hills.

The village's story runs with the 20th-century trek era — the trek village of the 20th-century-era trail life and the 19th-century-era mountain life of the Garhwal farms, with the village's modern role as the base of the Kali peak circuit and the home of the forest trails and the farms and the 2000s-era camps; the village's history of the 2013-era slide works and the forest paths, gives Wan its trek character.
