Geography & terrain

Valmiki National Park and Tiger Reserve fills the grassland-terai of West Champaran at Bihar's north-west corner, 350 km from Patna — around 880 sq km from the Gandak river's floodplain to the forested hills climbing toward Nepal's Chitwan border.

History & culture

The tract is named for the sage Valmiki, whose hermitage in these border-lands of legend sheltered Sita — the ashram sites of the same story still dot the region; declared a tiger reserve in the 1990s, Bihar's only one, the park's grasslands and sal forest now guard the corridor that links India's edge to Nepal's Chitwan country.
