Undavalli Caves open in a low sandstone ridge above the Krishna's south bank, 8 km from Vijayawada and just off the highway to Guntur — a four-storey rock-cut complex hewn into the hill, fronted by paddy fields and the river's wide channel.
History & culture
Roughly dated to the 4th–9th centuries, the caves began as Buddhist vihara-style halls before Hindu hands reshaped them; the fourth storey carries the famous reclining Ananta Padmanabha Vishnu, a 8-m-long figure carved in a single slab, making Undavalli among the largest rock-cut sculptures in South India and Vijayawada's finest ancient site.
