Geography & terrain

Ukhrul lies in the Ukhrul district of Manipur at about 1,700 m, 80 km from Imphal and 30 km from Shirui — the hill town of the region, its Shirui peak, the lily and the tribal villages set on the Manipur hills.

History & culture

The town's story runs with the 1946 lily era — the hill town of the Shirui lily and the 1946-era naming of the lily by the Kew botanist, with the town's modern role as the hill stop of the Imphal circuit and the home of the Shirui peak and the tribal villages and the 2010s-era treks; the town's history of the 19th-century-era tribal life and the peak walks, gives Ukhrul its lily character.
