Udayagiri Fort crowns a cluster of bare granite hills in SPS Nellore district, about 110 km from Nellore town on the Tirupati road — a 16th-century hill fortress of ramparts and bastions riding 3,000-ft ridges, its stone walls running for kilometres over the rocky spine of the Eastern Ghats' edge.
History & culture
Built up under the Vijayanagara kings in the 16th century and later held by the Golconda sultans and the British, the fort guarded the pass country between the coast and the temple lands; its ruined gateways, granaries and the hill temples inside still read the garrison's five centuries, with the town's old bazaars at the foot.
