Tirupati is the temple city of the Seven Hills — the town at the foot of the Tirumala ridge, 853 m above the Chitoor plains, with the Venkateswara shrine on top reached by the ghat road, the 3,550-step Alipiri climb or the new ropeway; one of India's busiest pilgrimage towns lies below.
