Tholpetty WLS lies in the Wayanad district of Kerala at about 900 m, 50 km from Kalpetta and 15 km from Mananthavady — the safari sanctuary of the region, its elephants, the birds and the trails set on the Wayanad hills' north edge.

History & culture

The sanctuary's story runs with the 1996 notification era — the safari sanctuary of the 1996-era notification and the 1980s-era life of the Kerala forest service, with the sanctuary's modern role as the wildlife stop of the Wayanad circuit and the home of the elephants and the 2000s-era drives and the watchtowers; the sanctuary's history of the 2010s-era safaris and the bird corners, gives Tholpetty its safari character.
