Geography & terrain

Thekkady is the tourism hub of the Periyar Tiger Reserve in Kerala's Idukki hills — a 777 km² reserve around the artificial Periyar lake (1895 dam), with the town of Kumily at its edge.

History & culture

Periyar was the Maharaja of Travancore's hunting reserve until 1934, when it became India's first wildlife sanctuary. The dam that made the lake was built in 1895, and the reserve is a Project Tiger stronghold today.
