Tarakeswar lies in the flat Hooghly country of West Bengal, 58 km north-west of Kolkata — a small railway town built around a single great temple to the Baba Taraknath, on the bank of the Silabati river, wrapped in the paddy-and-palm green of the Gangetic delta.

History & culture

Long one of Bengal's most visited Shaiva shrines, the Tarakeswar temple was founded in the early 18th century — the current black-stone structure dates to the 1770s under the patronage of a local raja who built at the site of the Shiva linga's vision — and grew famous through the taraknath worship's unbroken row of pilgrims; the annual Gajan and the Kanwar shiva nights of Shravan bring lakhs on foot, carrying the holy water of the Ganga to pour on the linga.
