Srikurmam stands in northern Andhra's Srikakulam district, about 20 km south-west of Srikakulam town on the road to Vizianagaram — a village of paddy flats gathered around one of the subcontinent's few temples where Vishnu is worshipped in his Kurma (tortoise) avatar, its tall gopuram rising over the fields.

The Kurma temple's carved lineage runs to the 11th century in its present form, with Chola and later sovereigns enriching it; unlike the lion- or boar-form shrines elsewhere, Srikurmam's deity sits reclined as the tortoise supporting the mountain — a rare iconographic treasure and the region's most striking sculptural site.
