Sohagi Barwa WLS lies in the Maharajganj district of Uttar Pradesh at about 100 m, 180 km from Gorakhpur and 50 km from Maharajganj — the terai sanctuary of the region, its elephants, the grasslands and the forest lines set on the Nepal border's edge.
History & culture
The sanctuary's story runs with the 1987 notification era — the terai sanctuary of the 1987-era notification and the 1980s-era elephant life of the Gorakhpur forest service, with the sanctuary's modern role as the wildlife stop of the UP circuit and the home of the 1987-era sanctuary and the elephants and the 2000s-era watchtowers; the sanctuary's history of the 2010s-era elephant corridors and the terai grasslands, gives Sohagi Barwa its terai character.
