Geography & terrain

Sikandra sits 8–10 km north of Agra's centre on the Delhi–Mathura road (NH-19, the old NH-2), in the flat, fertile Yamuna doab that carries Agra's Mughal monuments upriver — the Taj at ~13 km, Agra Fort and Itmad-ud-Daulah within 10–12 km, and Fatehpur Sikri ~40 km west. The tomb compound itself is a 119-acre walled charbagh with a raised stone platform, four-square water-channeled gardens and a perimeter wall pierced by four gates; Guru ka Taal and the Dayalbagh colony lie just beyond the northeast boundary.

History & culture

The site takes its name from Sikandar Lodi, whose fort once stood here, and Akbar began his own tomb on it around 1600 — uniquely, a Mughal emperor planned and paid for his own mausoleum while alive. He died of dysentery on 27 October 1605, and his son Jahangir completed the structure by 1613, capping the five red-sandstone tiers with the white-marble crown Akbar never saw. In 1688 the Jat chieftain Raja Ram Jat, fresh from looting Agra Fort, ransacked the tomb, stripped it of jewels, carpets and precious metal, and burned even Akbar's bones in reprisal for Aurangzeb's temple desecrations; the monument lay despoiled until Lord Curzon's restoration of 1905 returned its inlay and gates to splendour. Today it is a protected ASI monument whose own district-government page sets the official fees and hours.

Fly: Agra's Kheria Airport (AGR) is ~10 km from the tomb but has only limited domestic flights (seasonal IndiGo services to Delhi and a few metros). Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (DEL), ~204–230 km away, is the practical gateway — via the Yamuna Expressway the drive takes ~3–3.5 hours, with trains as the relaxed alternative.
Train: Agra Cantt (AGC) is the main railhead, ~9.5 km from Sikandra — Gatimaan Express (~100 min from Delhi) and Shatabdi Express (~2 hrs) are the daytime fast options, with overnight trains from Delhi, Mumbai and beyond. Agra Fort station (~11 km) serves some Rajasthan and Lucknow-bound trains. From either, autos and app cabs reach the tomb in 20–25 minutes.
