Shantiniketan lies in the red laterite country of Birbhum district, West Bengal, 160 km from Kolkata — the 'abode of peace' founded by Rabindranath Tagore's father in 1863 and grown by the poet into Visva-Bharati, a university town of art studios, open-air classes and mango-orchard campuses under wide skies.
History & culture
The site's name belongs to Tagore — his father Maharshi Debendranath built a retreat here in the 1860s, and Rabindranath transformed it from 1901 into his universal school and, from 1921, the Visva-Bharati university, where he taught, painted and wrote some of his greatest work; the town's legacy binds the Bengal Renaissance to its rural roots — the Sriniketan craft and agriculture centres and the year-round festival calendar (Poush Mela in December, Basanta Utsav in spring) are its living history.
