Rumtek lies in the Gangtok district of Sikkim at about 1,580 m, 25 km from Gangtok and 5 km from Ranka — the monastery hill of the region, its 1960s gompa, the golden mandala and the Tibetan art set on the forested ridge.

The monastery's story runs with the 1960s exile era — the monastery of the 1960s founding (the seat of the Karmapa) and the replica of the Tsurphu design, with the monastery's modern role as the pilgrimage of the Sikkim circuit and the home of the 1960s-era gompa and the golden mandala and the Tibetan art school; the monastery's history of the 1999 restoration and the 17th-century relics and the annual dances, gives Rumtek its monastery character.
