Geography & terrain

Rohtasgarh Fort rides a cliffed mesa above the Sone river in the Kaimur hills, 40 km from Sasaram — one of the largest hill forts in India, its ruined gates, palaces and temples spread over the tableland, approached by the winding route up the escarpment.

History & culture

The fort guarded the Sone's passage for the region's medieval dynasties — its gates carry Mughal, Afghan and Rajput hands across the centuries, and the fort famously held Sher Shah's family as the Suri era rotated around it; its later neglect under the British left the grandest pile of ruins in eastern India.
