Rajgir — the 'royal residence' — sits in a green bowl of the Rajgir hills in Nalanda district, 100 km from Patna, where five hills ring the old capital's ruins; hot springs, ropeways and the World-Peace Pagoda dot the valley that kings and Buddhas both called their own.

History & culture

The first capital of Magadha and one of the Buddha's great retreats — his sermon hills, the Ajatshatru fort walls and the old Jain and Buddhist sites line the ring of hills; the 20th-century Japanese-built Vishwa Shanti Stupa (the Peace Pagoda) added the modern pilgrim's crown to the ancient ground.
