Phyang lies in the Leh district of Ladakh at about 3,600 m, 15 km from Leh and 20 km from Nimo — the monastery village of the region, its 16th-century gompa, the festival and the views set on the Ladakh's ridge.

History & culture

The village's story runs with the 1515 monastery era — the gompa of the 1515 founding and the Red Hat sect's seat of the Drikung order, with the village's modern role as the heritage stop of the Leh circuit and the home of the 1515 murals and the July festival and the 12 m of the golden masks; the village's history of the 1979 restoration and the valley views, gives Phyang its monastery character.
