Geography & terrain

Phugtal lies in the Kargil district of Ladakh at about 3,600 m, 160 km from Kargil and 350 km from Leh — the cave monastery of the region, its cliff-set gompa, the trek and the Tsarap river set on the Zanskar's gorge.

History & culture

The monastery's story runs with the 12th-century Buddhist era — the cave monastery of the 12th century (the Ladakh's only cave gompa) and the lamas' seat of the Gelug order, with the monastery's modern role as the pilgrimage stop of the Zanskar circuit and the home of the cliff-set halls and the annual monastery festival; the monastery's history of the 2015 bridge and the 8 km trek from the road, gives Phugtal its cliff-monastery character.
