Pemayangtse lies in the West Sikkim district of Sikkim at about 2,085 m, 8 km from Pelling and 140 km from Gangtok — the monastery village of the region, its 1705 seat, the Cham dance and the peak views set on the Singalila ridge.

The village's story runs with the 18th-century monastic era — the monastery of the 1705 founding (the oldest of the Sikkim's Nyingma order) and the seat of the Pemayangtse sect, with the village's modern role as the sacred stop of the Pelling circuit and the home of the 1705 chapel and the Cham dance festival and the 5-storey temple; the village's history of the 1960s restoration and the Kanchenjunga views from the roof, gives Pemayangtse its monastery character.
