Panhala lies in the Kolhapur district of Maharashtra at about 970 m, 20 km from Kolhapur and 370 km from Mumbai — the fort hill of the region, its 45 km fort walls, the viewpoints and the history set on the Sahyadri's western edge.

History & culture

The fort's story runs with the 1189 Shilahara building — the fort of the Shilahara kings and the 45 km walls of the largest of the Deccan forts, with the fort's modern role as the heritage stop of the Kolhapur circuit and the home of the Shivaji-era 1659 incidents and the Teen Darwaja; the fort's history of the 1665 Kolhapur state and the 17th-century Aurangzeb era and the Somjai temple, gives Panhala its fort character.
