Geography & terrain

Pahalgam lies in the Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir at about 2,740 m, 95 km from Srinagar and 60 km from Anantnag — the valley town of the region, its Lidder river, the meadows and the trek base set on the Pir Panjal's green.

History & culture

The town's story runs with the shepherding tradition — the town of the shepherds' summer pastures (the pahalgam of the valley) and the 4th-century Betaab Valley's later film fame, with the town's modern role as the Amarnath Yatra base and the home of the Aru and the Baisaran meadows and the Lidder's trout; the town's history of the yatra's 1953 route and the 1986 Betaab Valley film, gives Pahalgam its valley character.
