Padum lies in the Kargil district of Ladakh at about 3,657 m, 240 km from Kargil and 300 km from Leh — the Zanskar town of the region, its monasteries, the treks and the valley views set on the Zanskar river's bend.

History & culture

The town's story runs with the Zanskar kingdom era — the capital of the Zanskar kingdom and the 10th-century monastery town of the region, with the town's modern role as the trek base of the Ladakh circuit and the home of the Karsha monastery and the Bardan monastery; the town's history of the 1822 Zorawar Singh's conquest and the Stongdey monastery and the Zanskar road's opening, gives Padum its Zanskar-town character.
