Ousteri Lake lies in the Puducherry district of Puducherry, 12 km from Pondicherry and 30 km from Villupuram — the wetland lake of the region, its birdlife, the marsh walks and the views set on the state's northern edge.

History & culture

The lake's story runs with the 2008 Ramsar listing — the Ousteri of the 2008 wetland recognition (the first of the Puducherry) and the reservoir of the colonial-era Osudu, with the lake's modern role as the birding stop of the Pondicherry circuit and the home of the 90 species of the winter birds; the lake's history of the irrigation bund and the 2008 restoration and the flamingo arrivals, gives the lake its wetland character.
