Geography & terrain

Nongriat lies in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya, 12 km from Cherrapunji and 70 km from Shillong — the root-bridge village of the region, its double-decker bridge, the treks and the homestays set on the gorge's deep green.

History & culture

The village's story runs with the 200-year-old living bridges — the village of the Umshiang double-decker root bridge and the tree-root engineering of the Khasi people, with the village's modern role as the trek stop of the Meghalaya circuit and the home of the 3,500 steps of the descent and the clear-water pools; the village's history of the rubber-tree roots and the 2019 landslides' rebuild, gives Nongriat its root-bridge character.
