Geography & terrain

Nathu La lies in the East Sikkim district of Sikkim at about 4,310 m, 55 km from Gangtok and 15 km from the China border — the border pass of the region, its passes, the views and the trade posts set on the Indo-China edge.

History & culture

The pass's story runs with the 1959 border closure — the historic Silk Road pass closed after the 1962 war and reopened in the 2006 trade agreement, with the pass's modern role as the border stop of the Sikkim circuit and the home of the 2006 border trade and the 2021 corridor visits; the pass's history of the British-era surveys and the 1904 Younghusband expedition and the Indian Army posts, gives the pass its border character.
