Naneghat lies in the Thane district of Maharashtra at about 820 m, 120 km from Mumbai and 70 km from Junnar — the pass town of the region, its ancient trade route, the inscriptions and the trek set on the Western Ghats' cuts.

The pass's story runs with the ancient Satavahana era — the historic trade pass of the Junnar-Kalyan route and the 1st-century inscriptions of the Naneghat cave (the records of the Satavahana queen Nayanika), with the pass's modern role as the trek stop of the Mumbai circuit and the home of the 80 km trail of the Raigad road; the pass's history of the ancient tolls and the views of the ghats' valleys, gives Naneghat its pass-trek character.
