Nalanda — the great university ruins — lies 15 km from Rajgir and 90 km from Patna on the Bihar plain, a vast red-brick campus of stupas, viharas and teaching halls spread over 14 hectares, one of the ancient world's great seats of learning beside its modern namesake university and the Nalanda museum.
History & culture
Founded in the 5th century CE and flourishing for 700 years, Nalanda taught thousands of monks — its library, the Dharma Gunj, burned as the university fell to invaders in the 12th century; excavated over the last century, the ruins now show nine levels of monasteries, the Sariputta stupa and the lecture halls that millions of visitors tread gently.
