The caves' story runs with the Portuguese quarrying era — the caves cut during the Portuguese-era stone quarrying and left as the hollow galleries of the island, with the caves' modern role as the photo and the exploration stop of the Diu circuit and the home of the honeycomb walls and the light shafts; the caves' history of the stone's reuse in the Portuguese buildings and the later rediscovery, gives the caves their rock-cut character.
