Geography & terrain
Nahan sits at about 1,000 m on a spur of the Shivalik range, the geologically youngest and softest of the Himalayan foothills — sediment from the rising Himalaya's rivers, folded and thrust up over the last few million years. The town's saddle position gives it views over the plains of Punjab to the southwest and the forested Himalayan massifs to the north, and its climate is temperate and misty, with heavy monsoon rain on the windward slopes. The surrounding forests of sal, pine and oak give way downhill to the Suketi beds — ancient river sediments whose fossils record the creatures that lived where the Himalaya now stands.
History & culture
Nahan was founded in 1621 by Raja Karan Prakash of Sirmour, who moved his capital here and built the town on a saddle of the Shivaliks — a planned princely capital with a palace, barracks and a bazaar laid out on a grid, an unusual arrangement for a hill town. The Sirmour state, one of the oldest of the Punjab Hill States, held the town until independence, and Nahan's princely history survives in the Raj Bhawan, the old palace and the town's quiet, orderly streets. The region's deeper history is fossil: at Suketi, 25 km away, Asia's oldest fossil park preserves the petrified bones of 200-million-year-old dinosaurs and early mammals discovered in the Shivalik deposits in the 1920s — a reminder that the Himalaya's youngest foothills are still exhuming the remains of the world's lost ages.

Nahan feels like a hill station that never grew up into tourism: one main bazaar, a clock tower, old wooden houses with corrugated roofs, and the hills visible from every street. The mornings bring fog off the forest, and the walks along the ridge — past the old palace, the cricket ground, the tiny temples — are quiet enough to hear your own footsteps. The view from the ridge over the plains, with the great Himalaya massing to the north, is the kind of view towns are built around. And the fossil park at Suketi is a strange, wonderful detour: life-size dinosaur models in a forest clearing where the real bones still lie. It's a weekend for slow walks, afternoon chai and the sense of a town that has stayed itself for 400 years.
