Mukto is the high Monpa village on the Bum La road, 15 km above Tawang town in the frontier district — a scatter of stone houses and prayer wheels on a green saddle under the great ridge, with yak pastures falling away on both sides of the track.
History & culture
The village holds one of the Tawang region's old monasteries and the valley life of the Monpa high country — herding, weaving and the winter festivals that pre-date the region's tourism; its fame today rests on the annual Mukto festival of folk dance and on being the last village of consequence on the pilgrim way to Bum La.
