Geography & terrain

Mudumalai National Park lies in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu at about 1,000 m, 80 km from Mysore and 40 km from Ooty — the elephant park of the region, its tigers, the jeep safaris and the forests set on the Nilgiri corridor.

History & culture

The park's story runs with the 1940 game sanctuary — the Mudumalai of the princely-era protection and the 1990 national park of the Project Tiger and the elephant corridor, with the park's modern role as the safari stop of the Nilgiri circuit and the home of the Theppakadu camp and the Mudumalai's bandipur link; the park's history of the Kattunayakan tribes and the 1973 Tiger Reserve, gives the park its elephant-forest character.
