Moodabidri lies in the Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka, 35 km from Mangalore and 60 km from Udupi — the Jain heritage town of the region, its basadis, the pillars and the betel country set on the coastal plain.

History & culture

The town's story runs with the Jain kingdom patronage — the town of the 18 basadis and the Saavira Kambada Basadi of the 1,000 pillars, with the town's modern role as the Jain pilgrimage of the coastal circuit and the home of the Guru Basadi and the 15th-century temples; the town's history of the Alupas and the Vijayanagara grants and the betel-leaf trade, gives Moodabidri its Jain-heritage character.
