Mokokchung lies in the Mokokchung district of Nagaland at about 1,325 m, 150 km from Kohima and 90 km from Dimapur — the Ao capital of the region, its villages, the morungs and the hills set on the Naga country's green.
History & culture
The town's story runs with the Ao Naga settlement — the cultural capital of the Ao tribe and the home of the Moats festival of the May days, with the town's modern role as the heritage stop of the Nagaland circuit and the home of the Ungma and the Mopungchuket villages; the town's history of the head-taking past and the British-era colonial station, gives Mokokchung its Ao-capital character.
