Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary lies in the Sattari taluka of Goa, 60 km from Panaji and 30 km from Valpoi — the river sanctuary of the region, its Mhadei river, the forests and the birds set on the Ghats' western edge.

The sanctuary's story runs with the 1999 river protection — the Mhadei sanctuary of the region's lifeline river and the mandovi's source, with the sanctuary's modern role as the birding and the hiking stop of the north-Goa circuit and the home of the Vagheri and the saddle peaks; the sanctuary's history of the tribal villages and the river's dams debate, gives Mhadei its river-forest character.
