Geography & terrain

Melghat lies in the Amravati district of Maharashtra, 90 km from Amravati and 600 km from Mumbai — the tiger reserve of the region, its forests, the rivers and the villages set on the Satpura's southern slopes.

History & culture

The reserve's story runs with the 1974 tiger protection — the oldest tiger reserve of the Maharashtra and the habitat of the tigers and the sloth bears, with the reserve's modern role as the Project Tiger stop of the state's circuit and the home of the Semadoh and the Harisal ranges; the reserve's history of the Korku tribe's life and the 1985 notification, gives Melghat its tiger-reserve character.
