Matheran lies in the Raigad district of Maharashtra at about 800 m, 110 km from Mumbai and 80 km from Pune — the car-free hill station of the region, its toy train, the viewpoints and the walks set on the plateau's forested top.

The town's story runs with the 1850 discovery and the heritage rail — the hill station discovered by the British collector P. M.
