Geography & terrain
Manesar and Sohna sit on the western edge of the Aravalli range where it dies out into the alluvial plain of Haryana — the last ridge of one of the world's oldest mountain systems, some 2.5 billion years old. Sohna's hot springs, at about 45°C, are a product of this ancient faulted geology: groundwater heated deep in the crust rises along the ridge fractures. Damdama Lake fills the valley between the ridge spurs, and the surrounding scrub of acacia, khejri and salavadora bushes supports peafowl, neelgai and wild boar — a green pocket in the semi-arid plain. The Aravallis here are low and worn, their bare ridges giving the whole area its dusty, ancient character.
History & culture
Sohna's sulfur hot springs have drawn pilgrims and bathers for centuries; the ancient Shiva temple beside the springs is traditionally associated with the region's medieval history, and Mughal records note the springs' repute as a health resort. The town's name is said to derive from 'Sona' (gold), with legend claiming the springs' waters carried gold dust. Damdama Lake, a few kilometres away, is an artificial reservoir created in 1947 to irrigate the parched Aravalli foothills, and became one of the first adventure-sports venues in the NCR — its sailboat and campsite culture dating back to the 1960s. Manesar, by contrast, is a modern story: an industrial and automotive township that grew in the 2000s, its villa and resort strip now serving as the NCR's most accessible weekend-switch-off zone.
