Geography & terrain

Machail lies in the Kishtwar district of Jammu & Kashmir at about 3,000 m, 75 km from Kishtwar and 230 km from Jammu — the yatra village of the region, its Machail Mata temple, the Chenab and the trails set on the Paddar valley's high country.

History & culture

The village's story runs with the region's yatra tradition — the village of the goddess Machail Mata and the 12-day pilgrimage of the July yatra from the Kishtwar town, with the village's modern role as the seasonal pilgrimage stop and the base of the Paddar treks; the village's history of the valley's saffron life and the mountain paths, gives Machail its yatra-village character.
