Geography & terrain

Loktak Lake lies in the Bishnupur district of Manipur, 45 km from Imphal and 150 km from the border — the largest freshwater lake of the north-east, its phumdis, the floating life and the Keibul Lamjao set on the state's southern plain.

History & culture

The lake's story runs with the region's water life — the lake of the floating phumdis and the last home of the sangai deer, with the lake's modern role as the Keibul Lamjao National Park's water and the fishing life of the Thanga and the Karang islands; the lake's history of the lake's legends and the INA's water crossings of the war, gives Loktak its floating-lake character.
