Lepakshi stands on a low rocky hill in Sri Sathya Sai district (formerly Anantapur), 15 km from Hindupur and 120 km from Bangalore — home to the 16th-century Veerabhadra temple, its village strung along the foot of the rock, and the colossal monolithic Nandi at the entrance.
History & culture
Built around 1530 under the Vijayanagara governors, the temple is a Late-Vijayanagara masterpiece; its legend ties the site to Jatayu — the name 'le pakshi' ('rise, bird') being Rama's cry to the wounded eagle — and its walls and ceilings carry some of the finest mural painting in Deccan art, with the famous hanging pillar still defying explanation.
