Geography & terrain

Kovalam curls around two crescent coves (Light House and Hawah beaches) on Kerala's south coast, 16 km from Trivandrum. The headland's 1890s lighthouse (Vizhinjam) splits the bays, and the rocky Vizhinjam point marks the state's southern coast's edge.

A 1930s fishing village that became India's first beach-resort town (the 1970s 'Kovalam boom') and Kerala's honeymoon coast — the Vizhinjam fishing harbour and the old Travancore-era lighthouse still anchor the town.
