Geography & terrain

The Kundalika river rises in the Sahyadri foothills and is impounded at the Tala dam, which releases water at scheduled times to feed the hydroelectric station downstream; the daily surge of regulated water through the gorge below is what creates the consistent Grade III–IV rapids. The river valley here is a classic Western Ghats course — boulder-strewn, forested, with steep green walls — and the river's clear, cold water makes the rafting a sensory experience of spray and stone. The surrounding forest is dense and wet in monsoon, and the valley's lateritic hills and cascading tributaries fill the whole gorge with the sound of water.

History & culture

Kolad's history is short and entirely practical: it is the village below the Tala dam on the Kundalika river, and the dam's scheduled releases created the conditions for India's most accessible white-water rafting. The modern sport began here in the late 1990s, when rafting operators realised that the dam's controlled water supply, rather than monsoon rainfall, could power dependable rapids year-round — a unique arrangement that still distinguishes the Kundalika from most Indian rivers. The surrounding region carries older layers: the nearby forts and trading routes of the Konkan hinterland, and the river itself was long a waterway for timber and produce between the ghats and the coast. Kolad's identity, though, is the river — a place defined by its release schedule and its rapids.

Kolad's whole drama is scheduled: at the release time, the river visibly rises, and suddenly the quiet brown water is a white, roaring highway of foam. The rafting is fast and loud — cold water down your collar, the gorge walls rushing past, the raft slamming through standing waves — and after each rapid the laughter comes easier. Camping on the bank, the river stays noisy all night, a constant white presence in the dark, and the bonfire smells of river air and smoke. It's a weekend built on one element doing something violent and joyful for twenty minutes at a time, and the rest of the time you're a damp, grinning spectator to the simplest kind of fun. You leave hoarse, tired and entirely happy.
