Geography & terrain
Kodaikanal perches at ~2,100 m on the Palani hills of Tamil Nadu, ringed by the Kodai Lake's 5 km walking loop. The town hangs over sheer escarpments — Coaker's Walk and the Pillar Rocks both look out over the plains 1,000 m below.
History & culture
A 1845 American missionary refuge that became a summer retreat — its Presbyterian church, 1845-era bungalows and the boat club all survive. Kodaikanal was also the retreat where Indian astronomers and the colonial planters shared the cool plateau.
