Geography & terrain

Kaziranga National Park spreads across 430 km² of floodplain on the Brahmaputra's south bank in Assam — elephant grass, wetlands and the riverine islands (chaporis) that make the park's signature landscape.

History & culture

Declared a reserve in 1905 by the British viceroy after rhino numbers collapsed — then a national park in 1974 and a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985. The park's survival through floods and poaching scares is conservation history in itself.
