Karwar lies on the Konkan coast of the Uttara Kannada district in Karnataka, 150 km from Mangalore and 500 km from Bangalore — the port town of the coast, its beaches, the islands and the naval harbour set on the Kali river's mouth.

The beach at Devbagh is wide and quiet, with fishing boats painted in bright colours pulled up on the sand, and the boat ride to the islands is all spray and gulls. The fish market in the morning is a loud, sliding-scale theatre — the catch arrives, prices fall, and an hour later the same fish is on your plate at a shack overlooking the harbour.
