Karla Caves lie in the Pune district of Maharashtra, 40 km from Lonavala and 90 km from Mumbai — the Buddhist cave complex of the ghats, its great chaitya and the carved pillars set on the hillside above the valley.
History & culture
The caves' story runs with the 1st-century BCE Buddhist monastic life — the great chaitya of the Hinayana era (among the finest of the rock-cut architecture), with the caves' carved pillars and the ribbed roof and the gateways; the caves' history of the trade-route patronage of the ancient Konkan and the region's Buddhist learning, with the village temple beside, gives Karla its chaitya-heritage character.
