Karkala lies in the Udupi district of Karnataka, 50 km from Mangalore and 40 km from Udupi — the Jain heritage town of the region, its 13-m monolith, the basadis and the temple tanks set on the laterite country between the coast and the ghats.
History & culture
The town's story runs with the Jain dynasties of the region — the 14th–16th century centre of the Jain faith of the Tulunadu, with the town's 13-m statue of Bahubali (the 1432 Gommateshwara) and the Chandranatha and the Parshwanatha basadis; the town's role in the Jain pilgrimage circuit of the south, with its Ramasamudra tank and the annual Mahamastakabhisheka festival, gives Karkala its Jain-heritage character.
